JUMPSTART - Heart, Blood and Lungs

For Jumpstart 2020 we have been exploring the functions of the heart and blood, how it circulates around the body and is filled with oxygen by the lungs in a closed circuit system called the cardiovascular system.

We learnt about the structure and function of the heart and how it does one of the most vital and important jobs in our body.

To extend the learning of this topic, we were able to get some real sheep hearts and lungs from AFFCO and have a fun, hands-on and interactive experience where the students were able to see, feel and explore how the heart and lungs work.

It has been a very fun topic which I think most of the students enjoyed, however, some have said they might become vegetarians now.

Attached are some cool photos of the students in 9K engaging with this topic. Ka mau te wehi!

Comparing Cultures

In social studies we have been learning to compare cultures. At the beginning of the term we really dove into Kiwiana and looked at what aspects truly made New Zealand the beautiful country it is. This is what gave us the basis of being able to compare another culture to our own. We were asked to choose a country we found interesting or hoped to visit one day and stud four aspects of it. We then compared our findings and creatively displayed our learning.

About us!

About 9K:

We are a group of children who have come from different kura around the Bay of Islands. Some of our kura we have transitioned from are Pakaraka, Russell, Paihia, Kawakawa, Peterhead and Moerewa.
Our group is pretty special. We are a kind class that has two form teachers; Mr Leitch and Whaea Narelle. One of them is 6’1… can you guess who?
We enjoy jamming our games and relaxing on the class couches. Our interests mainly relate to gaming, sleeping and eating but we are also into water sports such as diving and swimming.  Although we enjoy relaxing a lot, our most favourite subject is PE!
We haven’t all had the chance to have a pet, but those that have have mainly had cats and dogs.
